Why is pride in heritage important?
Fundamental to the achievements of Mexican American people is the rich cultural heritage of Mexico. For generations of students, educational curriculum in the United States has lacked information regarding Mexico’s treasury of history and individual attainment. As a result, a detrimental sense of shame is associated with being Mexican and with speaking the Spanish language. By contrast: "pride in cultural heritage education is important to the self-esteem of Mexican American students. Studies show a positive ethnic affiliation among Mexican Americans greatly influences individual development in many ways: lifestyle choices, values, opinions, attitudes and approaches to learning.“ (Gollnick & Chinn, 1990) Recognition of cultural heritage empowers individuals, and in this way fosters productive members of society. Finally, opportunities for learning, teaching, activism and promotion of a positive image of Mexican identity in a broader society can be accomplished.
